| Alan Greenspan, former chairman of the Federal Reserve, wrote in 1966:"(T)he welfare state is nothing more than a mechanismby which governments confiscate the wealth of the productive members of a society to support a wide variety of welfare schemes." (Quoted in Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, by Ayn Rand, 1967, p 106.)
We have a ton of work to do. How long has the welfare state been around? The welfare state, along with income tax, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, is merely armed robbery by our government. They force us to support both so they can take from us whatever we have worked for. We are the "productive members" of society; government produces nothing.
And this will not be easy. How many people have become dependent on the "welfare" of government? And I am not talking only about those in poverty; "welfare recipients" are some of the biggest corporations in our country --- General Motors, AIG, unions. We have to shrink our government to get it out of our lives.
Government does not exist for charity. In fact, government never really gives charity, because it does not give what it has created; it gives what it has confiscated from the "productive members" of society. And by doing that it destroys that which it leeches off of. If leeches are allowed to mutiply on a body, they will eventually destroy the very thing that gives them life. Our government is in the process of destroying the very body from which it draws life. We must remove this leech or at least shrink it to where it will not destroy everything around it. As one of our founding fathers stated: government is a necessary evil, a necessary leech. But it does not have to destroy country if it is properly controlled by the body, by the populace.
